AWARDS
Valley Forge takes pleasure in acknowledging the accomplishments and successes of our
alumni. During Alumni Homecoming Weekend
each May, we present awards to honorable alums in recognition of their achievements.
Awards are presented by President of the VFMA&C Alumni
Association, Samuel M. Laird '62.
DISTINGUISHED
ALUMNUS AWARD
Presented to those alumni who have demonstrated conspicuous achievement in their chosen
fields of endeavor. The recipient must be an extraordinary
example of a Valley Forge Alumnus
and citizen leader. This year's recipient of the sabre
and certificate is Ivan R. Sabel '63, whose distinguished career is characterized by the Valley Forge
motto: Courage, Honor, Conquer.
Following his graduation
from Valley Forge Military Academy in 1963, Mr. Sabel completed a
Bachelor of Science degree at New York University, and now serves as
the Chairman and CEO of Hanger Orthopedic Group, a world leader in
the design and manufacture of prosthetics. Valley Forge is proud to
present the Distinguished Alumnus Award to Mr. Ivan Sabel '63.

GEORGE WASHINGTON AWARD
The George Washington Award is
an initiative of the Alumni Association Forge Way Committee
to recognize an employee who enhances cadet
life by positively reinforcing the practices, traditions, and
mission of VFMA&C. COL Thomas
A. DeBlois, USA (Ret) is the recipient of the 2004 George Washington Award .
Colonel DeBlois has served at Valley
Forge since 1988, principally as the Tactical Officer of F Company
for the College. He took over as Commandant of Cadets at the
start of academic year 2003-4.
Colonel DeBlois is a graduate of
Providence College and received a master's degree from the
University of Missouri. In his many military assignments, he has
served overseas in Iran, Ethiopia and Vietnam, where he earned the
Combat Infantry Badge and numerous awards for his outstanding
service. Valley Forge is proud to present the
2004 George Washington Award to Colonel Thomas A. DeBlois.
Valley Forge is truly grateful for all
that these individuals do on behalf of the Forge, and would like to congratulate them on these awards and their lifetimes of success.

Also
presented during Homecoming Weekend was a Certificate of
Appreciation to Mr. Joseph Zane ’39. Sixty-five years ago, Zane
was a star athlete in varsity football, varsity basketball, and
varsity baseball, as well as captain of the baseball team. For
his exceptional athletic ability he was awarded the Athletic
Sabre as the Outstanding Athlete of 1939. Other awards
presented during 2004 Alumni Homecoming Weekend included
certificates for serving on the 2004 Board of Visitors, a gavel
for the outgoing president of the Alumni Association Board of
Directors, and a certificate for the outgoing chairman of the
Alumni Association Board of Directors.
